Meanings of names?

why is it that other names have cool meanings, like Arthur mean "noble", but Tyler literally means "one who tiles roofs or floors"!!?!

Meanings of names?
Because names like Tyler were original surnames which have become popular modern day first names. Surnames were often chosen based on a person's profession, so Mr. Tyler would have been someone who tiled roofs or floors for a living.
Reply:Yeah... Camryn (the name I picked out for a girl) means "bent nose"

I was soooo mad! And every name I come up with it has an awful meaning.. and my hubby is to the point where he is so mad telling me to pick a name on if I like it, not the meaning. But I want a good, cute, powerful, successful name, with a meaning that is actually good too, like Noble, Wise, etc. not... One who tiles roofs or Bent nose. =/ I feel your pain.

Hubby also wants to meet the "person who came up with the awful meanings" LOL
Reply:Names have different origins, and often their meanings are totally different than how the name seems. Unless a name has a specific personal meaning to someone (a family name, a name chosen solely for its meaning, etc.) I don't think it really matters. It's not something that most people really think that much about.
Reply:Lol. I don't know. Names like Arthur probably mean noble after King Arthur. But the world hasn't had a noble King Tyler, so I guess they just got someone named Tyler and used their occupation. I really don't know why. Did you know the name "Stanley" means, 'from the stony field' ? It's weird.... :)
Reply:Some names come directly from a language and have literal meanings. Like the German surname, "Klein" means "small. Other Names did stem from professions because, in older times, people were known by what job they held.
