Can you tell me the name of a book or website that tells the meanings and orgins of well known expressions?

For example

"A stitch in time saves nine."

"Let sleeping dogs lie."

Etc.

Thanks.

Can you tell me the name of a book or website that tells the meanings and orgins of well known expressions?
i think if you want a reputable source (since a lot of this stuff can be made up), i'd suggest trying the Oxford English Dictionary (there's an online site, but you have to pay for it). Instead try a library.

as for ones that could very well be true but aren't backed up by much, try

Reply:Bartlett's Quotations seems to be what you're looking for... if you want to search on yahoo for "origin of famous expressions", you'll find some websites, but who knows if they're reliable. Here's a link to Bartlett's on Amazon - see if it's what you're looking for.

http://www.amazon.com/Bartletts-Familiar...
Reply:I often find those answers on Wikipedia, or at least a good place to look for more "reliable" sources.

Also a good place to check is the general reference section of your favorite bookstore, sometimes they'll have books about things like that.
Reply:It's like a big list of all that stuff, but I'm having a time remembering the name of it: "Bartlett's Quotations?"

How can I mix different words to make a name which has the combined meanings of the "ingredient" words?

For example, let's say I wanted to make a name (as in a name one would give to a person) by combining two or more different words, so that the name had the all the meanings of each word combined (perhaps into a phrase) and have a few letters from each word? Is there any sort of program which can do this?

Thanks

How can I mix different words to make a name which has the combined meanings of the "ingredient" words?
I think I know what you're looking for, but I've never been able to find a generator that did exactly that. Making do with what is available depends on how you are going to use the names or words you come up with.

You might be able to find a word scramble generator that will let you enter parts of words and produce a list of combinations, but you will have to approach it as though you are creating a puzzle. A domain name generator (like the one below) might let you play with parts of words a little, but to a limited extent. I'd also recommend trying unique baby name generators (on sites for expectant parents), or, better yet, one that is meant to help writers or rpg fans make up character and place names; any of those might have generators or combination techniques that can help.

Really, the easiest way to play with custom combinations is by hand. Just write out parts of the words you're considering on little slips of paper and mix them up. Say them out loud and keep moving them around until you find something that sounds good to you. It's easy, quick, free, and might be just the thing to help you think of what you want.

Once you have some combinations that you like, it's time to do some research. Look in dictionaries for similar words. Enter them in search engines. See if they're similar to an unfamiliar term, or mean something in another language. See what's out there!

If you're really concerned about keeping the meanings of the words you combine, make sure you understand their etymological roots. I hope you find what you're looking for! :)

I need a list of assassins names and their meanings.?

The assassins were members of a secret Islamic order originating in the 11th century who believed it was a religious duty to harass and murder their enemies. The most important members of the order were those who actually did the killing. Having been promised paradise in return for dying in action, the killers, it is said, were made to yearn for paradise by being given a life of pleasure that included the use of hashish. Hence, the name for the secret order as a whole, ¡ašš³šºn, “hashish users.” After passing through French or Italian, the word came into English and is recorded in 1603 with reference to the Moslem assassins.

I need a list of assassins names and their meanings.?
Unfortunatly assassins usually have normal names. Lee, John, etc.

Do the meanings of your first and middle names complement eachother?

I don't think they have to. When I'm old enough to have kids, I'll probably end up giving them family names - but my parents sort of went for it. They picked two kinds of virtuous qualities they were hoping I'd personify - so my names mean "pure, unsullied and clear" and "angelic". Hehe....

Ok, maybe those don't comepletely tie in with eachother - but how about yours?

Do you have a name like Leon Richard - making you a powerful and brave lion? =)

Or maybe your names spell out a pretty phrase - like Autumn Skye

Whether they were meant to be that way or just happened to

If there's no obvious relationship, maybe you could find out what they mean for fun, and make up your own connection

Do the meanings of your first and middle names complement eachother?
I can't find my name Westley (WEST-lee) in most books. The similar name Wesley means 'from the west field', and my middle name Trent seems to mean 'thirty'. I can't think of anyway they connect. I also saw Trent with the meaning 'gushing waters'....

So I guess if you put 'from the west field', and 'gushing waters' they can connect to mean I flooded a field? Lame!
Reply:My first and middle names are both from the Bible. Abigail Josephine (Josephine is a feminine form of Joseph).

But I don't think that was intentional. My parents just like Abigail and Josephine was my great aunt.

My dad wanted to name me Applebee though. Like the restaurant.
Reply:Yeah...my name makes no sense. It mean "Most beautiful" (aww thanks mom and dad) and the middle is " Tribal Name of the Gauls", which I really hope is wrong... cause that's kinda ugly

Maybe I'm an extremely beautiful Gaul warrior? That makes no sense. Booo. Nice Ouran avatar though. I love Kyouya!

Reply:Tracey is a variation of Theresa and means "late summer"

Lynn means "ruddy-complected"

Um... okay then. Nope, my name makes NO sense.
Reply:My first and middle names mean Wild Mercy... oh, thanks mum and dad. I'm not exactly wild, so there's no need to have mercy. LOL ;p
Reply:"bitter star" and "weary"

Not really, though they're both negative.
Reply:Well, mine is Amber Dawn, so kinda. Yeah the dawn is an amber color!

鈥淲hat are the names of some popular flowers with a sentimental meanings to you鈥? and why?

Stargazer Lilies - I had them in my wedding bouquet.

鈥淲hat are the names of some popular flowers with a sentimental meanings to you鈥? and why?
Dandelions, because I always used to pick them when I was little. They're my favourite flower.
Reply:Pansies - because my best friend's father planted them in his flower bed every fall.
Reply:the poppy...always for rememberance

I would like to know the nationalities and meanings for the last names of Saenz and Castillo??

Both are Latin names and could come from any number of countries. To find the exact nationality, you need to trace the person, and find where the ancestor came from.

Not ALL names have a "meaning"... a name is really nothing more than a form of a label. In medieval times, there were so few people that last names were not even needed. The custom of surnames simply came about as a way to sort out 500 Juans or Williams, so forth.

I would like to know the nationalities and meanings for the last names of Saenz and Castillo??
Both last names are spanish. Saenz is actually a spanish jewish last name. Many of the Saenz families left Spain due to the inquisition and migrated to northern Mexico. However, the spanish inquisition later arrived to Mexico too. This time, Saenz jews finally converted (most if not all of them..). Report Abuse

Reply:If you have your clarivoyancy turned on I'm sure you could decipher someone's nationality that way or if you know someone who can pull up legal records too. And another option is to ask the person too. I think the best way is to just ask the person...I'm not into breaking laws and invading someone's privacy and I certaintly don't believe in clarvoiants.

Finding the meaning of names...you could buy a book that covers the orgin and the meanings of names.

If I didn't answer your first part of your question then maybe you might need to educate yourself on the legal and dictionary based definitions of nationality. I know my race, ethnicity, and nationality are all from different continents...

Are there special meanings behind bird names? if so where can i find a list of them?

like for example my name lynn means waterfall/lake/ or body of water so do bird names have special meanings...there are meanings behind flower names to so shouldnt there be meaning behind bird names?

Are there special meanings behind bird names? if so where can i find a list of them?
Names of birds are often just descriptive - like red-headed woodpecker or painted bunting. Sometimes they're named after a scientist (Nuttall's woodpecker is an example of that) or, in the case of Anna's hummingbird, after a duchess. It's kind of fun to look at their scientific names too and figure out what they mean. Haliaeetus leucocephalus (bald eagle) means white-headed fish eagle, which is a very good description of a bald eagle. Some of them are even wrong! The white-winged dove was famously misnamed by the very guy who made up the scientific naming system in the first place. He named it Zenaida asiatica, thinking it came from Asia, when it's really a North American bird. I don't know if a simple list of these meanings exists. I know this stuff because I have a whole bookshelf full of books about birds and have studied the names because I find it interesting. I hope you enjoyed.

Does anyone know the origins and meanings of the last names Ploch, Pitcock, Tayam, Maciel, Vivar, and/or Udomb

Ploch- This is a surname of Czech origin. Recorded in over forty spelllings including Vlach (Czech), Wloch (Polish), Wallach (Jewish), Walch, Wloch, Ploch, Bloch (German), Olasz (Hungarian), Volokhov (Russian), Bloch (France) and in England the rare Block, as well as many diminutives and patronymics including Vlasek, Vlasaneek, Vlahovic, Vlahos, Vlajkovic and others. It derives from a medieval word vlach meaning a foreigner, and is cognate with such words as welsch, originally German, and anglicised to welsh or walsh. In England welsh was a term given by the invading Anglo-Saxons of the pre 6th century a.d., to the Olde English who fled into what was then known as Cambria, and later as Wales. Vlach was first applied in medieval times by the Czechs to refugee Italians and Rumanians, who were (are) also known as Walchians. It is unclear when or where the surname was first recorded, as church registers for many parts of Europe particularly those under former Communist control have been destroyed. From those available we have recordings such as Johan Vlach at Kobylnice, Brno, Czech Republic, on August 27th 1746, and Simon Vlahovic at Tinjan, Slovenia, on April 4th 1914.

Pitcock-This name, with variant spellings Pydcock, Pithcock and Pitcock, derives from Pyd or Pid, short forms of the old English pre 7th Century personal name Pyd(d)a, plus the suffix "cock". Though not recorded independently this personal name is preserved in such placenames as Piddinghoe in Sussex and Piddington in Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire. The latter place was recorded variously as Petintone (1086, Pydentona (circa 1160) and Pidinton (1187), and translates as "the tun (settlement) of Pydda's people". The suffix "cock" was always added to the nickname of the baptismal name, and it indicated the pertness of lusty and swaggering youth. On December 24th 1561 Constantyen Pidcock, an infant was christened in St. Vedast, Foster Lane, London and on January 19th 1794, Mary Ann Pitcock was christened in St. Leonards, Shoreditch. The christening of Charlotte, daughter of William Pidcock, took place in St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Westminster on October 28th 1798. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Thomysin Pydcock, (christening), which was dated August 3rd 1560, St. Vedast, Foster Lane, London, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1, known as "Good Queen Bess", 1558 - 1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling

Icouldnt find the other names. Sorry. I hope that much helps though.

Why was pharisee saul's name changed to paul, and what's the difference in the meanings of the two names

God had a reasoning for changing people names. Starting even in the old testament. He changed peoples names to something that meant something huge! For instance Sarai to Sarah, Abram to Abraham, Simon (His disciple) to Peter, and of course Saul to Paul. (and others) God did huge life changes in each of thier lives before changing thier names.

This is where to find some of the name changes:

Sarah - Genesis 17:15

Abraham - Genesis 17:5-8

Peter - Matthew 16:15-19

Paul - Acts 13:1-4 prefaces then 13:9 this is where his name changed.

I am not 100% sure of the differant meanings but I do know that every time God gave each of these people a task of some sort, or a promise, or made a covenant with them he changed thier name. I think that is so cool!

Why was pharisee saul's name changed to paul, and what's the difference in the meanings of the two names
I know that God changed Abram to Abraham (Genesis 17:5), Sarai to Sarah (Genesis 17:15), Jacob to Israel (Genesis 35:10), and Simon or Simon Peter, son of John, to Cephas (John 1:42). But please cite to me the Bible verse wherein God Himself changed the name of Saul of Tarsus to Paul. Report Abuse

Reply:Good Question, but I don't know.
Reply:The idea was when God changed someone's name a big change had happened in their life and they were not the same person. It doesn't matter what Saul's name was changed to, what matters that it was changed to show that something significant had taken place in his life.
Reply:Good evening to you, too!

Saul was a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin (Philippians 3:5). He was from Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, Asia Minor (Acts 31:39). He was a Pharisee and persecuted the sect, the Way, until he was blinded by light brighter than the sun on his way to Damascus (Acts chapter 9). This was the turning point in his life from being a persecutor to an advocate.

Did you know that Paul is the Roman name of Saul? Both refer to the same person but one is his Hebrew name and the other, his Roman name. When he became an advocate of Jesus, in all of his letters, he used his Latin or Roman name Paul. He used this name when he preached the good news about Jesus Christ to non-Jews. He used his privilege of Roman citizenship for his own protection when he was persecuted as a Christian.
Reply:I do not know the answer to this question, sorry. I just wanted to comment that you ask some great questions. I often learn things based on your questions and the answers to them. Thanks.
Reply:Pharisee means grade A men and paul is a name that cannot define the soul. The two do not match even though one is the progeny.
Reply:It has change because the new generation no longer need a name of special god name, because its only make this person become so arrogant at the end become a monster?

That is why using special gods name can cause only chaos and more death because human kill god that is why the last test is if he is a god then he shall not bleed to death and will not even die? That is why Jesus claiming son of god is not popular at time to because many super power government will slay Jesus to death. Claiming a son of god means all humanity shall only pray to him and so on. That means loosing power and wealth and people for the government?

Meanings of Death Note names.?

Does anybody know what does Ryuk, Rem, Sidoh, and Gelus means.

Meanings of Death Note names.?
I think Gelus is just a re-spelling of "jealous". I don't know about the other Shinigami, but I know Kira is both based off of "killer" (or the gangsta-speak "killa" (which is mentioned in one of the convicts' notes), since Japanese often confuse r's and l's), and also means "sparkle" which may refer to the pristine image he has of himself and the screen he puts up to reply to the 2nd Kira.

From Bombay to Mumbai . Why India changed it ? And what are the meanings of the two names ?

The appellation Mumbai is an eponym, etymologically derived from Mumba — the name of the Hindu goddess Mumbadevi, and Aai — mother in Marathi. In the 16th century, the Portuguese named the area Bom Bahia (Good Bay), later corrupted to Bomaím or Bombaim, by which it is still known in Portuguese. After the British gained possession, it was anglicised to Bombay. The name was officially changed to Mumbai in 1995, but “Bombay” is still used by the popular media and by many of the city's inhabitants and famous institutions. The reason for the name change appears to have been a political move by Indian nationalists.

From Bombay to Mumbai . Why India changed it ? And what are the meanings of the two names ?
When did the city's name change to Mumbai?

The city was earlier called Bombay. The name was changed by an act of the Indian parliament in 1997. The reason for this change was that in two of the local languages, Marathi and Gujarati, the city has long been called Mumbai. It is believed that the name comes from the name of one of the old Koli goddesses, Mumba Devi, a temple to whom now stands in Bhuleshwar.

Why was it ever called Bombay?

By a historical accident. There was no city on these seven islands before the 18th century. The nearest city was Thane. It has a long history and was mentioned by many travellers, including Ibn Batuta. The seven islands held many villages with different names, some of which survive in the names of areas in the city: Girgaum and Worli to name just two. The British established a port settlement near the harbour in the late 17th century. This eventually grew and engulfed all the other villages. The name Bombay may have got attached to the British settlement as an English corruption of the Portuguese description of the harbour, "Bom Bahia", meaning good bay.

What would you have liked it to be called?

That's not hard. If the city didn't have a name already, I would have called it "Pydhonie" (meaning foot wash), after a crowded corner of south Mumbai. That place name comes from a long lost creek which allowed tidal waters to wash into a dusty square where no tide has been in the last couple of centuries. But I think it is an apt name for a city which has historically called to wanderers to settle down and do business: the British, the Gujaratis (including the Parsis and the Bohras) and Marwaris, the Iranis, Baghdadi Jews and Armenians, the Tamils, Malayalees and Konkanis, and more recently the Biharis, UP-wallahs and Bengalis.

Munladee: I am not sure what this means. "dee" means good - but beyond that I am at a loss. Having the name written in Thai script would help with this one.

Sorry, this is the best I can do.

Does anyone know the translations or meanings of these Thai names? Penwadee and Munladee.?

What are the names of the paintings with the hidden meanings in the book The Da Vinci Code?

The Last Supper

Madonna of the Rocks

What are the names of the paintings with the hidden meanings in the book The Da Vinci Code?
Go purchase the picture version, like 20 bucks at all the good bookstores. explains everything
Reply:The Mona Lisa holds the clue "So Dark the Con of Man" which is an anagram for "Madonna of the Rocks", both which hang in the Louvre.

The Last Supper, which is in Italy, supposedly contains an image of Mary Magdalene. She is the one of Jesus' left in the picture. Brown claims that there are several symbols of the feminine divine encoded within the painting by Da Vinci.
Reply:I believe it was Da Vinci's The Last Supper. I haven't read or seen the film. I'm boycotting the book and the film because it is a slap in the face of anyone who ever studied art. They try to sell this ridiculous idea that someone altered the composition to hide a dark secret. Whatever! That is complete BS. If you were to change the positions of any of the disciples, then it would completely mess up the whole structure of the composition. Seriously, take a look at it. There's a reason why Da Vinci was considered one of the great masters. Phff! I'd rather go see the Omen.

Meanings of korean names?
http://www.babyhold.com/list/Korean_Baby...
Reply:it is very hard to know the meaning of a korean name like that, to know the meaning you have to actually know the Hanja 한자(the old chinese charecters) that the names are based on. for example my name

Yoo Myeong Kim,

this is an unusal name but at first glace it sounds like famous in korean, Yoo meaning to have and Myeong meaning "Name", if i remember correctly, how ever my name is based on a completly diffrent Hanja.

Yoo meaning storege, and Myeong meaning "bright" and Kim my last name meaning "Gold", Don't ask me why my name is like that, it was my grndfather's idea

so the conculusion is becouse there are Hanjas that sound the same but mean diffrent in order to know for SURE what the name means you need to know what hanja it is based on
Reply:they all clearly mean tom...

jk

why do you want to know anyway?

im korean and i dont know any of those...
Reply:OOOOOO i lived in KOREA!!!!! :D....btw i have no idea wht they mean sorry lol

I assume you mean ancient egytian hiroglyphics..if thats the case then you got a big job..you have to learn hiroglyphics or at least read some ancient egyptian history..i once saw a supplement in a book of a few ancient egyptian names traslated but they where not many ..i really dont think there is a web site thats done that unless some libary or university has done some sort of research...
