If it's in anything other than kanji, then you might not be getting the right meaning for it. For example, the word "kami" can mean hair, paper or god you don't know what it's referring to unless you see it in context or can see the actual character.





One site that I found useful when searching for certain characters was: http://www.mahou.org/Kanji/





Simply drop the character(s) in the box and it'll tell you the meaning.
